After a couple of weeks’ break I did some pages in my fast fashion-themed journal. I had pre-glued some of them so that gave me a head start!
The title (which is only revealed when you lift the flap on the cover) is made from two words used in musical terminology: allegro (fast) and dolce (proceeding quietly or with a light touch).
The journal is really filling up and I love how different elements protrude from the edges. I’ve used eco printed luggage labels, tags, buttons, a key ring and found or stamped text.
All the pages feature stitching, partly because I love it and partly because stitch is what holds our clothing together and/or embellishes what we wear. I also wanted to demonstrate that it’s worth taking the time to create something (the antithesis of fast fashion).
Many of the words have double or even opposite meanings. For example the word practice might denote building your skills with the aim of making a quality item (positive); it could also mean business practice which is either ethical or unethical (opposites; positive/negative).
Many components are upcycled or found, as shown in these images. This demonstrates my aim to practice zero waste as much as possible, but can also be symbolic, eg. closing/opening doors (key) earning enough/not enough to live on (daily bread, breadline) and reusing/discarding ordinary items (paper clip, bread tag etc).
The term threads (referenced by the label in the above photo and the stitching itself) can mean clothes, but also highlights the basic component which holds our garments together or adds those extra decorative touches.
My latest video includes this particular art journal as well as other art forms. Find it here or via the image below; hope it inspires you!
