GONE RUSTIC STUDIO and GALLERY
'I didn’t realise it at the time, but this art quilt is a visual representation of place. It could almost be an aerial photograph in its design.
Less obvious is that the methods I used relied on place, specifically the places where I live and work.
The vintage blanketing found in a local op shop; the plants harvested from the land; the vintage silk given to me by a friend – all these express in an unspoken way my environment and relationships.
The meditative hand stitching reflects my presence and thoughts in my home and work place. As I worked, my mind and my hands moved freely, almost unconsciously.
When I finished it, I suddenly saw that I had told a story without words. It was my story, a story unique to me. The story of who I am, where I am, and what I do.
A story no-one else can tell.'
[Eco dyed and printed vintage wool blanket and silks (leaves, rusty nails); eco dyed and commercial threads; collaged; hand stitched.]
